Heart, Soul and Mind

Blog October 2020

People often ask me what style of art I do.   This is a tough question because to answer it, even for myself, I am not sure I can. The reason is it seems to always be changing and different styles emerge.

Many artists, most actually, you can look at a painting you have never seen and know who painted it.  They have a style that is uniquely their own.  Part of me envy’s that focus, that love and dedication to a set style and part of me hopes that might lie in my future as well.  But a part of me doesn’t want that.

My art shifts with my mood, my energy and my thoughts at that moment.  I have never been good at forcing a style, even when I do , if it just isn’t in me at the time I am painting the painting just doesn’t work.  I sometimes wish I wasn’t this way about my art.  People say “why don’t you paint like this all the time” ; “Why is your style changing again”.  I think I have recently come to accept, at least for now, this is who I am and what my art is.  A refection of me.

So, what do I mean by all of this?  I would put my art today in three categories, heart, soul and mind. First, I would tell you I start all paintings the same, with my only my hands putting paint on the board or canvas.  I want to see what it wants to be, where my mood takes it.  Generally, that means over-painting  many many times before it says what it wants to be.  But the paint and I will get there.

Art of my Heart – “Prince of the Sky”

“The Prince” is an example of what I would call the art of my heart.   Art of the emotion of nature, it makes you think, it builds a relationship with the creature.  You can talk to them, say “good morning” to them.  I want to feel the painting has a true heart that will touch the viewer.  It is not meant to be realism, but you know who you are talking to, and perhaps they make you smile.

Art of my Soul – “Souls”

“Souls” is named after where these sorts of paintings come from for me.  Deep deep in my soul.  They cannot be planned; they just manifest on their own as I paint. The story writing itself in my head as I go.  These are the hardest for me in many ways but mainly because I can’t plan them at any stage.  They depend so much on my mood, and how the image talks to me.  These types of paintings have different meanings to different people, and I want it that way.  I want them to speak to people.

Art of my Mind – “Koi”

“Koi” is one example of what I call my work of the mind.  This used to be what I did exclusively; very detailed creations, pastel, ink, scratch art, or pencil.    This work is  a very different mindset for me, I have to know exactly what I want to do before I start, and often can’t make many mistakes along the way.  I have many of these that are not finished mainly because I lose interest and then it is hard to restart that focus.  I still do them, but not often of late.

I hope this gives some insight to my work and who I am as an artist.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! 12-9-19 post

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  We had a great time cooking, baking and enjoying friends.  For us the spirit of thanksgiving is giving thanks for now only how lucky we are but our friends and family.

As many have seen my Etsy store is now up and running.  With a ton of help over the holiday from my dear friend Sue, we pulled all the small original art that was laying around my studio.  Which I have to say was more then I thought was there! I thought I would talk a little about the treasures she found.

Small original paintings - only a few of these, the raven, rhino, hippo and the little monster.  Monster is pretty new, on paper which I don’t do a lot of.  The raven has been decorating the studio for a couple years.  Hopefully he will find a new home.  Rita Rhino and Hanna hippo are only about a year old, I just couldn’t decide if they were done and Sue helped me make that decision!

The Ink originals are something I play with off and on, and really enjoy them.  Many of the bases are reject watercolors or collages from Sue, and I take them and starting inking what I see.  My two favorites are the puppy with the sock and Boris the bull. They always make me smile.

The mono prints I have only done a few times since I don’t own a press of my own.  (yes it is on my wish list for someday!).  Love the process.  Some for sale are just the raw mono print, others I have done some hand coloring on with pastel or pencil.

The last originals we posted are scratch art.  Love doing these.  This is often what I take when I travel or am on vacation.  Easy to pack and doesn’t make to much of a mess, plus I love the detail of them.  Most I have done in the past I tend to give away as gifts but these 3 have been hanging out in a drawer and need to find a good home.

Please take a look and I would be thrilled if you passed the link on wherever you play in social media as well.  Would like to fine homes for all.

So what about the big paintings??

They are on going.  As you know Woodland Studios in Stoughton Wisconsin currently has a number of my paintings.  A Bear, Fox, Badger and Cardinal, all framed and ready to ship.

In my studio I have completed now a moose (I just love him).  As well as “Souls”, “Bird in Hand” and “Connections”.  I will probably be selling these through my new website after the first of the year but if you have an interest in any of those look on my gallery page and then just email me to discuss.

I have also started a series I am calling “legends”.  The first painting is of the world turtle, a legend in many cultures of a turtle that carries the world on his back.  The other two in progress are the great bear and brother wolf.  More to come on those.

Last is my bird paintings.  There is an international show in Wisconsin in September that I am working on 2 entry’s for.   One is the harpy the other a falcon.  Both are coming along, please keep your fingers crossed.

So that is what is happening in my studio.

All of you have a wonderful Christmas and fantastic new year….lots more to come!    Cindy

Welcome to my new website!

Welcome to my new website!

First, I want to thank Jim and Sue for helping me with reviewing and editing for the site.  Second, I want to thank my wonderful and patient web builder, Sandra with Soda Creek Digital for all her work and patience helping to get this up.

So how is this all going to work you might ask?  Well it will probably be a bit of trial and error for a while so be patient.  My plan right now is two-fold.

First, I will be selling some of my larger original pieces directly on this website.  I will release them in groups as I get them ready to go and will let folks know they are going for sale in an email.  So please “sign up” on my site. I won’t inundate you with email, just when new pieces are being released. Please remember I have art for sale at Woodland Gallery in Stoughton Wisconsin.

Second, the “prints and other creations” page has a link to my Etsy store.  In the store I will be selling not only print but also small one of a kind originals.

I will also post on both my Facebook art page and right here previews of what I am working on and what is coming, so check back and please follow my facebook page as well!

I am very excited about this and would love to hear what you think.  You can email me or leave a message on my contacts page.

More to come soon!
